The Area Planning & Zoning office provides building permits. Permits are required for Porches, Roofs, Decks, Sheds, Garages, Pole Barns, Homes, Signs and more. Permits are not required for interior remodeling. Please contact the office if you have any questions at 765-348-3884.

IMPROVEMENT LOCATION PERMIT APPLICATION

To apply for a permit, please send the following information, via email to the Permit Clerk. The review process can take up to 3 business days.  You will be contacted as to when you can pick up the permit and the fee amount for the permit and any inspections required.

1.       Property Owner name, address, and phone number

2.       Builder information

3.       Building plans/site plans

4.       Approximate Cost of Construction

5.       When is the work going to start

EXCEPTIONS:  If you are purchasing a Pre Fab shed, no inspections are required, and you do not need to submit building plans, only site location.  That permit may be expedited, and you can get the same or next day.

If you are getting a roofing permit, building plans are not required.  You do need to let us know the roofing material and whether it is a roof over or a tear off.  That permit may be expedited, and you can get the same or next day.

INSPECTIONS:  Inspections must be scheduled at least 24 hours in advance.

Questions?

Is a permit required for a fence?

A permit is not required for a fence; however, it must meet ordinance guidelines.  It should be one foot in off the property line.  It cannot impede the vision from any roadway or alleyway.

Is a permit required for roofing?

Yes, a permit is required for a roof over or a tear off and re-roof.  Contact the permit clerk for details

Is a demolition permit required?

Yes, a demo permit is required in Blackford County.  Contact the office for details.

Are inspections required for new construction?

Yes, at the time the permit is issued, we will let you know what inspections your particular build requires.  Those will be paid for at the time you pull the permit, and we will instruct you on scheduling those inspections.

What if I do the work without getting a permit?

Per the zoning ordinance, you can be subject to fines.  Should your building not meet the building codes or ordinance requirements, you could have to demo part of your building.
